How to remove the remnants of a failed installation?

In most cases a failed setup should rollback and leave the system in a clean state. However there may be situations where your installation completely freaks out and doesn't let you install or uninstall. In this case you can use Microsoft's Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to delete all references to the package from Windows Installer related registry entries.  Note that this tool does not uninstall the package, i.e. it doesn't delete files, shortcuts, or application specific registry entries. It just unregsiters the package with Windows Installer.

You can obtain the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from Microsoft's Knowledge Base article 290301.
