A Developer's Guide to Install Programs for Windows Author:
Leslie Easter The book starts with the very basics: What is an install program, and why do you need it at all. But starting with Chapter 3 it concentrates on InstallShield. It explains in details all the terms and concepts of InstallShield5, thus eliminating a common source of misunderstandings and problems that make a beginner's life hard. The second half of the book provides an overview of the InstallShield API, including the undocumented, but often useful, internal SdDialog and WinSub functions. It also explains how to extend InstallShield's capabilities by calling Windows APIs and creating custom dialogs. It has several examples for the more difficult tasks like shell and registry interaction. What the advanced users as well as the experts will love are Leslie's "InstallScript Modules". A set of useful functions (also included on the accompanying CD-ROM) that were taken from OrangeBrain's InstallShield training lessons. Thus the book covers and goes beyond the "Using InstallShield" and part of the "Advanced InstallShield" trainings. Additional information can be found at the Prentice Hall web site: Table of contents, author bio, the preface and a sample chapter. This book was written for InstallShield 5.1, an update CD for IS 5.5 is available from the author. In the meantime InstallShield Professional 6.0 has been released, with an enhanced IDE and some changes in the scripting language. However, a large part of the information in this book is still true and applicable. If you are using InstallShield 5.5 or 6.0 you should be careful when installing the accompanying CD-ROM. Some of these enhanced templates and wizards will not work or even break the functionality of your version. |

The Definitive Guide to the Win32 API Author: Charles
Petzold The 5th edition of the standard book on Windows programming has been fully revised for Windows 98. But it's still "Petzold style", that is: straight C code and Windows APIs, no C++ or MFC. What may be a disadvantage in application development is welcome for InstallShield developers, because it makes it easier to port Petzold's sample code to InstallScript. Later revesions of this book use C# or VB .NET instead. |
